Initially, a list of films was generated as well as a list of names for the festival.

Each film was distilled into a single word or phrase to find an underlying theme, which led to further brainstorming.

An initial direction of mind confetti led to a dead end, but ideas based on pattern and ripples proved to be more thematically tied to each film.

Mood Board

The imagery and typography is very patterned and geometric. The colors are bold and allow for a multiplied overlap effect where two colors generate a third.

Identity Sketches

The sketches play on the concept of each letter being an individual that happens to be part of a bigger collective.

The letterforms are constructed of basic shapes and all consist of a different appearance that showcases the uniqueness of undulated forms.

Each letter will have a short, but repeating animation leaving the mark in a constant state of motion. Some shapes slide, some fade, some rotate, and some spin.

Storyboarding

Three initial ideas for the storyboards were explored. They are the Mesmeric Revelation, Creation of Letters, and Letter Replacement.

Mesmeric Revelation

Mesmeric Revelation focuses on the concept of perception bookended by writing of Edgar Allan Poe. His writing speaks of how perception is the first step in the transmission of an idea into the world.

The letterforms are flashed quickly and compete for the space of the screen and the viewer’s attention, each one replacing the previous. The final part of the writing of Poe finishes out the sequence giving the viewer something deep to think about before seeing the logo. The music is soft with cymbals washing and eventually crashing with noises that radiate as the letters replace each other.

Creation of Letters

Creation of Letters shows zoomed in forms that will ultimately be revealed as the letters making up the work Undulation. The titles of the films included in the festival will slowly follow the forms and mirror the movement of the shapes as they overlap, grow, and move into place.

Before the reveal of the end tag, a line depicting the nature of the film festival and the connection between motion, thought, and undulation will linger. The end tag will show with all the letters moving in full view, giving the viewer the complete thought. A mixture of dissonant piano sounds accompany the movements of the shapes and transition into a simpler set of sounds as the text and logo resolve.

Letter Replacement

Letter Replacement showcases the ten films directly by utilizing a single letter from Undulation inside the name of each film in the festival. The opening directly tells the viewer that there are ten films that aim to alter perception. Each film title fades in and drifts in a different direction, some as words, others as individual letters.

Each shape is animated in a style that aims to reflect the content or theme of the film. The sounds are swelling stringed instruments and go quiet for each transition from one film to another.

Asset Creation

The components are nothing more than the pieces of the logo and the names of the films being shown in the festival. The final sentence before the end tag is a modified quote from Edgar Allan Poe on perception that ties in the concept of the fesstival.
