Natural Navigation
The signage system for Zilker Park and the surrounding area makes use of a combination of natural materials and modular design to help park guests find their way and understand the rules of the public park. Large signs are often the most instrusive to the natural environment, but this system makes use of natural formed stone for the most prominent signs to give each a natural look. The smaller signs are cast concrete and sheet metal painted in natural colors. Signs use a system of banners to allow signs to be changed seasonally or for specific events.
Simplified Map
The sign for the botanical garden uses a simplified version of the garden layout to help visitors keep a better mental map about each section. The map is sectioned in colors to help guests easily find specfic destinations without having to search the entire map.
Message Schedule
Designing the sign system is only part of the process. In order to best understand the needs of visitors, the park is mapped and signs are positioned based on common decision points. The message schedule helps keep track of the locations and words and graphics used at each sign location.
